Piloting Climate Change Adaptation to Protect Human Health [Fiji]
The Piloting Climate Change Adaptation to Protect Human Health project is first global project on public health adaptation to climate change and expected to contribute to the broader goal of ensuring increased adaptive capacity of national health system institutions including field practitioners to respond to climate-sensitive health risks. It is planned to implement a set of nationally executed activities aiming four outcomes:
- (a) Development and implementation of Health Information System covering hydro-meteorological disasters (HMDs) and climate-sensitive disasters in meteorological and health agencies.
(b) Development of operational procedures in managing psychosocial impacts of HMDs. - Development and support for coordination mechanism for climate change and health action plans, including mainstreaming HMDs response plans into Health Ministry and National Desaster management Office.
- Implementation of early warning and response system developed above and monitoring of the effectiveness in minimizing immediate and secondary (e.g. disease outbreak) health impacts of HMDs.
- Cooperation and exchange of best practices and lessons learned amongst participating countries towards innovation in health adaptation to climate change
